Whether youβre looking for a fun touristy Cancun beach or a more secluded local favorite, youβll find it here in our Cancun beach guide. These are the 5 best beaches in Cancun to plan your perfect beach getaway.

*Note: Since 2008, Sargassum (seaweed) has regularly arrived on the Caribbean coast of Mexico (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc.) from April to August. Many resorts and beaches remove the seaweed from the sand daily, but it can pile up by the water’s edge and be stinky in places where it’s not removed. For this reason, we suggest getting a hotel with a nice pool area for swimming or spending some time on the islands of Cozumel or Isla Mujeres which are largely protected from the seaweed.

There are plenty offree palapas (on a first-come, first-served basis) and beach chairs and umbrellas available for rent along the beach. FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best beach in Cancun for swimming?
Playa Langosta and Playa Caracol are the top choices for swimming in Cancun thanks to their calm, shallow waters that are safe for all skill levels. Playa Langosta even has a playground nearby making it ideal for families. Playa Delfines is stunning but has stronger waves and is not recommended for weak swimmers after lifeguards leave. From our experience, Playa Langosta’s gentle water made it the most relaxing swim of the trip. Our full guide above covers the five best Cancun beaches with safety ratings for each.
Are the beaches in Cancun free to access?
Yes, all beaches in Cancun are technically public by Mexican law, meaning you can access them at no charge. However, amenities like umbrellas, loungers, showers, and restrooms are often restricted to hotel guests at beaches adjacent to resorts. Playa Delfines is the most visitor-friendly fully public beach, with free palapas on a first-come, first-served basis and free public parking at the southernmost end of the Hotel Zone. Our beach guide above details the amenities available at each beach.
What is the most popular beach in Cancun?
Playa Delfines, also known as Dolphin Beach, is Cancun’s largest and most popular public beach, famous for ivory white sand meeting electric turquoise water at the southern end of the Hotel Zone. It offers public restrooms, showers, a small playground, and a lifeguard on duty. We found the famous Cancun sign photo opportunity here draws large crowds by mid-morning, so arrive early for a good spot. The full guide above covers all five top-rated beaches in Cancun.
Which Cancun beach is best for families with kids?
Playa Langosta is the top family beach in Cancun, with calm and shallow water perfect for kids, a playground on site, and public restrooms available. Playa Caracol is another family-friendly option with gentle currents, though restrooms and showers are only available to hotel guests at that location. We found Playa Langosta’s relaxed vibe and easy street parking made it the smoothest family beach day we had in Cancun. Our guide above highlights kid-friendly features at each beach.
Does Cancun have a seaweed problem on its beaches?
Cancun does experience Sargassum seaweed arrivals annually from April through August, when it can pile up along the shoreline and in the water. Beachfront hotels and resorts clear the sand daily, but seaweed can still be present in the water during peak months. From November through March, the beaches are largely clear and the water is pristine. For seaweed-free swimming year-round, we recommend visiting nearby Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, which are largely protected. Our full beach guide above addresses seaweed conditions by month.
What is the best hidden gem beach in Cancun?
Playa Chac Mool is Cancun’s best kept secret. Located right next to the busy party area of Playa Forum, it is consistently overlooked and offers a quiet, secluded atmosphere with crystal-clear, calm water excellent for swimming and diving. Arriving at Cancun beaches before 9 AM gives you the best choice of spots under free palapas, especially at Playa Delfines where shade fills up fast. Midday from 11 AM to 2 PM brings the strongest sun and the largest crowds, particularly during peak season from December through April. We found late afternoon around 4 to 6 PM to be a sweet spot for cooler temperatures and fewer people. Our beach guide above includes practical tips for timing your visit to each beach throughout the day.
How do you get to Playa Delfines from the Cancun Hotel Zone?
Playa Delfines sits at the southern end of the Hotel Zone and is easily reached by the R1 public bus for around $1 USD per person, with stops running the entire length of Kukulcan Boulevard. Driving is also straightforward, with free public parking available at the southernmost end of the beach. From our experience, the bus is the easiest option during peak season when parking fills quickly. Our guide above covers access and parking options for all five Cancun beaches.
Is Playa Marlin safe for swimming in Cancun?
Playa Marlin can have powerful waves and a strong undertow, making swimming risky at times, particularly for less confident swimmers. It is better suited for beachside relaxation, sunbathing, and activities like parasailing. A lifeguard is on duty and umbrellas and chairs are available to rent. We found the wide open beach at Playa Marlin to be one of the most visually stunning in the Hotel Zone even if we stayed out of the water. Our full guide above rates swimming safety at each of the five best Cancun beaches.
