Cancun is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, and there is no denying that the real action is found beneath the waves. You’ll find over 80 miles of famously gorgeous coastline in Cancun. These shores hug the world’s second-largest coral reef, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. While nearby Cozumel is famous for having some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the entire Caribbean, the Cancun area has some truly wonderful opportunities as well. Cancun Snorkeling & Scuba Diving Sites

Although Cancun features far fewer snorkeling sites than nearby Cozumel, the turquoise waters and diverse locales make it a favorite among adventure seekers.

MUSA

1. MUSA

MUSA, or the Underwater Museum of Art, is one of the best snorkeling destinations in Cancun, and for good reason. Located between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, MUSA features 470 life-sized underwater statues designed to promote the growth of vibrant coral and act as an artificial reef. While many come to scuba dive, you can also snorkel at MUSA, where you can see the stunning underwater world of sea turtles and tropical fish.

One of the most coveted installations to see at MUSA is the life-size replica of a Volkswagen Beetle made out of concrete and seaweed known as ‘Anthropocene.’ The “Silent Evolution” is another can’t miss installation as this ethereal piece is comprised of dozens of human figures, providing the illusion of an underwater crowd.

The only way to access MUSA is by booking a snorkeling or diving tour, and there are many to choose from.

Keep in mind that there are two additional MUSA locations, including Punta Nizuc (below) and Punta Sam. These locations hold around 10% of the sculptures you’ll discover at MUSA, but they are rarely crowded.

Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

2. Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

One of the world’s largest reefs, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is second in size only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The reef stretches along the coasts of four different countries and is home to over 65 types of vibrant coral, 500 species of fish, 4 types of sea turtles, and manatees. Think of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef as a bustling underwater metropolis for marine life.

The reef is technically accessed from nearby Puerto Morelos, and tours are the best way to explore the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Cancun is the closest city to Puerto Morelos at only 23.8 miles (38.4 km). Making it approximately a 40 minute drive from Cancun to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef area. An easy day trip while exploring all that Cancun has to offer.

Punta Nizuc

3. Punta Nizuc

The best spot for snorkeling in Cancun’s famous Hotel Zone is Punta Nizuc, at the southernmost point of the hotel zone. This is a world famous snorkeling destination, and Punta Nizuc is a protected spot home to abundant marine life, including manta rays, colorful fish, sea turtles, and more. Thanks to its clear, calm, shallow waters year round, Punta Nizuc is an excellent place to snorkel, regardless of your skill level.

As mentioned above, this centrally located snorkeling wonderland is home to one of the MUSA’s underwater galleries. The Punta Nizuc installation has 33 sculptures and is ideal for sculpture snorkeling, thanks to the shallow waters.

To get to Punta Nizuc, you can book a snorkeling tour from anywhere in Cancun. There are two access roads to Punta Nizuc one from Mérida via highway 180 to Cancun. The other access is from Puerto Morelos by taking highway 307 that connects Tulum with Cancun. Unfortunately, it is not accessible by land unless you stay at one of the few resorts surrounding Punta Nizuc.

Shipwreck Snorkeling

4. Shipwreck Snorkeling

Spread throughout the region, you will find a bounty of underwater shipwrecks in the waters of the Yucatan Peninsula. Exploring the shipwrecks in the waters off Cancun’s coast is an unforgettable experience. Several ships were even sunk intentionally by the Mexican government to create new reef areas for snorkelers and marine life.

This is a popular spot for beginners and more advanced snorkelers, as the shipwrecks are a magnet for vibrant Caribbean marine life. With its coral-encrusted hidden nooks and crannies, the wrecks make for some of the best snorkeling in Cancun. It is also a hotbed for giant turtles, dolphins, and reef shark sightings.

To access the shipwrecks in the area, it’s beset to book a tour with an experienced guide who knows where to find the best shipwrecks in the area.

Chitales Reef

5. Chitales Reef

You can find the Chitales Reef just off the coast of the hotel zone’s northern end, between the mainland of Cancun and the western side of Isla Mujeres. This is unquestionably one of the more popular snorkeling spots near Cancun. It’s easy to see why once you look into the underwater world of the colorful colonies of fish and coral.

The Chitales Reef has a maximum depth of 35 feet and is overflowing with marine life that includes barracuda, angelfish, parrotfish, yellow goatfish, and grouper, to name a few. This reef is also famed for its high number of sea turtles and excellent visibility, often upwards of 30 meters. Chitales is a great place for first time Cancun snorkelers looking to get up close and personal with some of the area’s most iconic marine life.

Thanks to the shallow waters, this is also an excellent place for families to snorkel together in Cancun, as kids can see what the underwater world has to offer. The Chitales Reef can only be accessed by boat, and is best to explore with an experienced guide.

El Meco Reef

6. El Meco Reef

An excellent option for first-time snorkelers visiting Cancun is the relatively shallow El Meco Reef. With a maximum depth of just 4 to 5 meters and no strong currents, this protected marine area is full of life. El Meco provides a slice of coral reef located just north of Puerto Juarez and showcases an array of colorful marine life.

This is a place where you will find turtles, stingrays, barracuda, and a kaleidoscope of fish gliding in the waters daily. Be sure to look for some of the underwater statues placed here to grow coral and attract fish and crustaceans. As part of the MUSA gallery, which is located in the El Meco Reef system, you can access the reef through a tour.

The reef’s proximity to the El Meco Archeological site is another reason to visit. This pre-Hispanic Mayan port was once an essential hub for maritime trade. While you can’t snorkel around the ruins themselves, it’s worth checking out.

Responsible Snorkeling In Cancun

When snorkeling in Cancun, it is recommended to use a rash guard to protect your skin from the sun, as sunscreen is prohibited in the water. When out of the water, remember to use a reef-safe sunscreen, which is widely available in the area. This ensures you won’t damage the reef with the toxic chemicals in typical sunscreen. Also, keep a safe distance from sea turtles and other marine creatures and do not touch the coral. Touching coral not only damages the reef, but it can also hurt as it’s often sharp!

The Best Time To Snorkel And Dive In Cancun

The best time to go snorkeling or diving in Cancun is during the dry season, which is typically between November and April. The Yucatan Peninsula receives the least rain and the most sunshine during this time, which means you get the best visibility. Snorkeling and diving at this time also provides you the opportunity to possibly see bull sharks, as they tend to migrate between November and March.

There is no need to worry if you are visiting Cancun during the wet season because it’s still worth going on a snorkeling or diving trip. You will want to make sure you choose a tour that departs in the morning, as the rain tends to start in the afternoon.
