Responsible Snorkeling In Cancun
When snorkeling in Cancun, it is essential to use a rash guard to protect your skin from the sun, as sunscreen is prohibited in the water at all marine protected areas including MUSA, Punta Nizuc, and cenotes. When out of the water, remember to use a reef-safe sunscreen, which is widely available in the area. This ensures you won’t damage the reef with the toxic chemicals in typical sunscreen. Also, keep a safe distance of at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) from sea turtles and other marine creatures and do not touch the coral. Touching coral not only damages the reef, but it can also hurt as it’s often sharp!
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best snorkeling spot in Cancun?
MUSA, the Underwater Museum of Art, is the top snorkeling destination in Cancun, featuring 470 life-sized underwater sculptures designed as an artificial reef between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Punta Nizuc is the best option within the Hotel Zone itself, with calm shallow waters and 33 additional MUSA sculptures accessible year-round. From our experience, the combination of marine life and art at MUSA is something you simply cannot find anywhere else in the Caribbean. Our full guide above reviews all six top snorkeling and diving sites in the Cancun area.
How much does a snorkeling tour in Cancun cost?
Snorkeling tours in Cancun typically range from $40 to $90 USD per person depending on the type of tour and number of sites visited. The 5-in-1 full-day tour, which covers the reef, sea turtles, shipwrecks, and underwater statues, sits at the higher end of that range and includes hotel pickup, drop-off, gear, and a guide. Budget-friendly reef and shipwreck tours start at around $40 to $50 USD. We found the multi-site tours offer dramatically better value than single-stop options. Our guide above compares the top tour options with current pricing.
Can beginners go snorkeling in Cancun?
Absolutely. Cancun has several excellent beginner-friendly snorkeling sites, with Punta Nizuc and El Meco Reef topping the list. El Meco has a maximum depth of just 4 to 5 meters and no strong currents, making it ideal for first-timers. The 5-in-1 snorkeling tour is specifically designed for beginners and includes hands-on instruction from guides. From our experience, even nervous first-time snorkelers came back from these tours raving about the sea turtles they spotted. The guide above explains which sites and tours work best for different skill levels.
What marine life can you see snorkeling in Cancun?
Cancun’s waters are home to an incredible variety of marine life, including sea turtles, manta rays, colorful reef fish, barracuda, parrotfish, angelfish, and grouper. Bull sharks migrate through the area between November and March, and whale sharks are frequently spotted off the coast from May through September. At the Chitales Reef, visibility often exceeds 30 meters, and turtle sightings are nearly guaranteed. Our guide above covers which species you are most likely to encounter at each snorkeling and diving site.
Is it better to snorkel or scuba dive in Cancun?
Snorkeling is the better choice for casual travelers and families, as most of Cancun’s top sites including MUSA’s shallow galleries and Chitales Reef are easily accessible at or near the surface. Certified divers will unlock deeper shipwrecks, richer reef walls, and bull shark encounters that snorkelers simply cannot reach. If you have never dived before, Cancun’s 2-tank beginner scuba tour makes it easy to try the sport with no prior certification required. Our guide above compares tour options for both snorkelers and divers at every skill level.
What is the MUSA underwater museum in Cancun?
MUSA is the Museo Subacuatico de Arte, an underwater museum featuring more than 470 life-sized concrete sculptures installed on the seafloor between Cancun and Isla Mujeres to create an artificial reef. The most iconic installation, Anthropocene, is a full-size concrete Volkswagen Beetle encrusted in seaweed and coral. You can access MUSA only by booking a snorkeling or diving tour, and there are three separate gallery locations around the Cancun area. Our guide above covers what to expect at each MUSA site and recommends the best tours for visiting.
When is the best time to go snorkeling in Cancun?
The best time to snorkel in Cancun is during the dry season from November through April, when rainfall is minimal and underwater visibility is at its clearest. This window also coincides with bull shark migration between November and March, offering a rare encounter for experienced divers. During the wet season from May through October, it’s still worth going but choose morning departures, as afternoon rain can reduce visibility. Our guide above outlines what to expect in the water during each season, including whale shark season.
Can you snorkel directly from the beach in Cancun?
A few of Cancun’s beaches offer some shore snorkeling, but the most rewarding sites require a boat. MUSA, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, Chitales Reef, and the underwater shipwrecks are all boat-access only. Punta Nizuc at the Hotel Zone’s southern tip is accessible by tour boat and is your best bet for structured shore-accessible snorkeling. We found the organized boat tours dramatically better than anything accessible from the shoreline. Our guide above explains which sites require a tour and which ones you can approach independently.
What should you not do when snorkeling in Cancun?
Never touch the coral, as physical contact damages the reef and can cause painful cuts. Sunscreen is prohibited while in the water in Cancun’s protected marine areas, so wear a rash guard instead. Keep a safe distance from sea turtles and do not chase or handle any marine life. When out of the water, always use reef-safe sunscreen, which is widely available throughout the area. Following these practices protects both you and the reef. Our guide above covers responsible snorkeling and diving practices in full.
How far is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef from Cancun?
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is technically accessed from Puerto Morelos, which is approximately 24 miles (38 km) south of Cancun, around a 40-minute drive. The reef is the world’s second-largest coral reef system after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, stretching through four countries and supporting over 500 species of fish. It makes an excellent day trip from Cancun, and guided tours from the city are easy to book. Our guide above covers the best tour options and what to expect at the reef.
